Repentance (1984)
This film directed by Tengiz Abuladze filmed before the beginning of perestroika in the Soviet Union, almost immediately became a landmark for the national cinema and caused great interest of the public worldwide. Soviet citizens was banned a film to watch but after Perestroika it was in a wide display across USSR. Releasing the film has caused many to rethink notions of good and evil, conscience and honor ... In 1987 at the Cannes Film Festival was awarded the following awards: Grand Prix (Grand Prix), a special prize of the International Federation of Film, as well as the Ecumenical Jury prize. In 1987 the film was awarded the "Nika" in 6 categories: "Best Fiction Film", "Best Director, Best scenario work, " "Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction"and "Best Actor" (Avtandil Makharadze). Georgian apocalyptic short film, 8 Minutes, has recently achieved great international success at the world’s important films festivals. On September 29, at the Sydney Indie Film Festival, the film was nominated in 7 categories, including The best film and The best music nominations. Finally, a short film was named the best science fiction piece at Sydney Indie Film Festival. It is noteworthy that this genre separately does not exist in Georgian cinema at all. After this great success, "8 Minutes" claimed the main award at Manhattan Short Film Festival as well. Short film by Georgian directors was listed among top 10 best films at the festival.
