Zero Strays Georgia: Experiences with Cats, Dogs, Supply Chain and Capability Building
An online talk by Matthew Simon, UK Ambassador for Zero Strays Georgia — Thursday 23 July, 6pm, via Zoom

Georgia, a country of under four million people, is home to an estimated half a million stray cats and dogs. Since 2015, Zero Strays Georgia, founded by Mariam Shekiladze in Zugdidi, has been reducing that number one animal at a time: rescuing, treating and neutering strays, and finding them homes in Georgia and across Europe. The charity refuses to use shelters; instead it places animals with paid foster families in rural communities, socialising the animals while providing a valuable income to households that need it. This talk follows a stray from a Zugdidi roadside to a sofa in Frankfurt, Warsaw, or, with rather more difficulty, Bristol: the passports, microchips, rabies titres, quarantine clocks and flight volunteers that make up the charity's remarkable supply chain. It will also look at how an initially one-woman rescue effort has built lasting capability: a foster network, international vet campaigns, a Czech sister organisation, and a voice in the debate over Georgia's national approach to stray animal management. The talk ends with the many ways, some requiring nothing more than a spare seat on a flight, that you can help.
